A punch down tool, also called a krone tool,(after wiring systems manufacturer ADC KRONE) is a small hand tool used by telecommunications and network technicians to terminate cable runs and cross-connect jumpers at 110 blocks, 66 blocks and patch panels. Most punch down tools are of the impact type, consisting of a handle, an internal spring mechanism, and a removable slotted blade. For light-duty use, there are also less expensive fixed-blade type punch down tools, which lack the impact mechanism. |

To use the punch down tool, a wire is pre-positioned into a slotted post on the punch down block and then the punch down tool is pressed down on top of the wire, over the post. This requires a bit of pressure until, with an audible “klunk”, the wire is stripped and contact made, as it is “punched down” into the slotted post.
To accommodate different terminal contact sizes for 66 blocks, 110 blocks and krone blocks, different types of blades are required. Most removable blades are double-ended, either with identical or different blade setups. A typical double-ended blade has one end that only inserts the wire for daisy-chain wiring from post to post and another end that inserts wire and trims the excess length for termination at a post. The trimming blade cutting edge works against the plastic insulating block of the 66 or 110 block.
